THE DAILY MA’AMAR BY OUR REBBE RAV ELIEZER BERLAND SHLIT”A, WRITTEN ON THE MORNING OF SHUSHAN PURIM, COURTESY OF THE “HASHEM HU HAELOKIM” LEAFLET: The root of Purim is Reish-Peh-Alef, as it says, “He shall surely heal [provide for his healing] – VeRaPo YeRaPe” (Shemot 21:19), because on Purim, all the cures for all the illnesses in the world are drawn, and there is no illness in the world which is not healed on the festival of Purim. And therefore, it is said about Shaul: “It was in the first year of Shaul’s reign” (I Shmuel 13:1), because Shaul [=337] is the numerical value of Purim plus 1 [=337]. Therefore, Shaul did not kill Agag, because he knew that Haman, who would enact for us the festival of Purim, would descend from him. Because how is it possible to kill a whole people in one day? And moreover, it’s made known eleven months beforehand, from 13 Nisan to 13 Adar, which is eleven months?! Rather, Haman knew that this decree would turn into a holiday, and it would be fulfilled, “And it was turned about; the Jews prevailed over their adversaries” (Esther 9:1). Therefore, he said: Not like Pharaoh, who gave them the merit of the festival of Pesach for seven days; and also I am not like Antiochus, who gave them the merit of the festival of Chanukah for eight days. I will make for them a festival for only one day, and I will make the decree for only one day! But the Jewish people were clever, and made out of one day seven days, and we read the Megilah on 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 [of Adar – see Tractate Megilah 1:1]. And according to Rashi, they hung Haman after the end of the 16th, which is the night of the 17th. In this way, it comes out that the Jewish people celebrate the festival of Purim for seven days.
