And a Needy for Shoes • A Lesson in Kiddusha Rabba Parshat Miketz from the Esteemed Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a

Before you is the complete lesson delivered on the holy Shabbat of Parshat Miketz 5786 by the esteemed Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a, during Kiddusha Rabba after the conclusion of the Mussaf prayer:
The lesson is written as understood by the listener, and if there is any mistake, it should be attributed to the writer and not, God forbid, to our teacher the Rav shlit"a
[For selling the righteous for silver] 'and the needy for a pair of shoes' (Amos 2:6), why did they sell Yosef? Because of shoes, why didn't they have shoes, why did they walk without shoes, what was until then, did they walk without shoes?! Reuven was already 23 years old because he was born a year after Leah got married, so now he is 23, Yosef was 17 and Reuven was 23, so for 23 years he walked without shoes? And do they sell a brother for shoes? Let them sell a sheep! The Midrash says that there were 1,200,000 dogs just the dogs guarding Yaakov's flock, each flock was about a million sheep, so let them sell a sheep, sell a cow! With a cow, you can buy a thousand pairs of shoes.
But until then, they didn't need shoes, because the land was holy of holies, all of Eretz Yisrael was in the holiness of the Holy Temple, so they didn't need shoes.
And Yaakov returned at the Yabok crossing because of the small vessels. Why did he return, how much is a jug of oil worth, 2 shekels, why did he return?! But he didn't want to leave it outside the land, because it was the jug of oil for Chanukah. The Pirkei d'Rabbi Eliezer says where did he get the jug of oil? When he fled from Esav, a jug of oil fell from the heavens, because he didn't have oil, where did he have oil? When he fled from Esav, did he take oil with him? But it fell from the heavens, and when he returned from Lavan's house, he forgot it at the Yabok crossing, but he returned to take it so that it wouldn't become impure, because outside the land it becomes impure, so that there would be a miracle on Chanukah.
And regarding Noach, it is written 'and in her mouth was an olive leaf plucked off' (Genesis 8:11), 'plucked off in her mouth' is the gematria of 'David son of Yishai' – that Noach needed to bring Mashiach ben David, and Canaan did not agree. This was Canaan, also the Pirkei d'Rabbi Eliezer says this in chapter twenty-three and also the Zohar in the Zohar Chadash says it was Canaan. Why didn't he want, what did he care if he had a fourth child?! But he knew that the fourth child was supposed to be the Mashiach, he knew that Noach needed to bring the Mashiach, and he didn't want to, because he knew that the moment Mashiach arrives, there will be no sins and no mitzvot, and he wanted to commit sins, and if Mashiach arrives, there will be no sins and no mitzvot, because Noach received the gift of the Mashiach because of what he suffered in the ark, because the lion gave him such a bite... he wanted to taste human flesh, and he (Noach) became blemished now he can't offer sacrifices because he is blemished, so they gave him [a gift] that he could bring the Mashiach.
So 'and the needy for a pair of shoes' (Amos 2:6) what, because a brother dreams a dream, they want to kill him? So indeed if the brothers had told him 'you saw a good dream' then Yosef would have immediately become king over the whole world, and the brothers would have become ministers over the whole world, because Yosef was king and they were supposed to be his ministers, but because they didn't tell him 'you saw a good dream' they delayed it by twenty-two years, and then only he became king, and they became shepherds.
