From Heaven, Itâs Decided For You - Admit that You Erred, Regret â Daily Chizzuk with Rabbi Eliezer Berland Shlitâa
THE DAILY CHIZZUK FROM OUR REBBE RAV ELIEZER BERLAND SHLITâA -- "THERE'S NO [WOMAN] FROM AMONG THE DAUGHTERS OF YOUR BROTHERS?" âFrom the eater came forth food, and from the strong came forth sweetness.â (Shoftim 14:14) âHis father and mother said to him, âIs there no woman among the daughters of your brothers and in all my people that you go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?â But Shimshon said to his father, âTake her for me, for she is fitting in my eyes.ââ (Shoftim 14:3) WEDNESDAY, 17 SHEVAT 5783 â âTHEY TOOK OUT HIS EYES, BECAUSE HE SAID, âSHE IS FITTING IN MY EYES!ââ These are his holy words: âFrom the eater came forth food, and from the strong came forth sweetness,â like in a wedding. Shimshonâs parents said to him, âTell us, thereâs no [woman] among the daughters of your brothers?â âWe donât understand. Take a wife from Belz, take from Karlin. Why is he taking a Philistine woman?â Why didnât Shimshon learn from you? [The Rav is speaking to one of the listeners at the shiur.] His father and mother ask him, âTell us, thereâs no [woman] among the daughters of your brothers?â They go; they say to him, âMaybe regret? Maybe get a grip on yourself? Youâre marrying a Philistine woman? Where have we come to?â SHIMSHON NEEDED TO SAY, âI DONâT KNOW.â A PERSON WHO DOES SOMETHING THATâS HARD TO UNDERSTAND NEEDS TO SAY, âI DONâT KNOW.â Why take such a woman from there? I donât know! Donât know! [INSTEAD,] SHIMSHON SAID, âFOR SHE IS FITTING IN MY EYESâ â THEY TOOK OUT HIS EYES. WHY DID THEY TAKE OUT HIS EYES? BECAUSE HE SAID, âSHE IS FITTING IN MY EYES.â Itâs forbidden to say, âShe is fitting in my eyes.â The moment that you did something not good, say, âI donât know how this happened. I donât know how this transpired.â But if one says, âI didnât feel like it. I wanted it. Iâm the one who decides. Iâm the one who makes the rulesâ â You donât make the rules! You donât decide! From Heaven everything is decided for you. That you did something not good is also from Heaven. Even the things that are not good are from Heaven â but admit that this is from Heaven. Regret immediately, because if you decide, âI decide. I acted, I decidedâ -- [If] you decided, then oy vavoy! Youâll be sick with all the illnesses in the world. All the time that you say, âI donât know anything. Everything is from Hashem. I didnât create the world. I didnât create the evil inclination. I created Torah as a seasoning for it.â A person, even if he stumbles in something, he needs to stay â âI donât know! I donât know what, donât know why, donât knowâŚâ Shimshonâs parents ask him, âTell us, thereâs no [woman] among the daughters of your brothers? Thereâs no Jewish woman? Thereâs no girls in Belz? No girls in Karlin? Thereâs no girls, none in Ponovitz? None in Slobodka? Then why does he need to take a Philistine woman from Gaza, from Timnah? Because she is beautiful -- no mother would agree to bringing home an Arab womanâŚÂ David conquered Moab. David brought women from Moab. He brought from Geshur, and no mother would agree to bringing an Arab woman home.
