Purim Review: Ma’ariv and Megillah Reading with Moreinu HaRav Eliezer Berland Shlit”a

For the fourth consecutive year, we have merited to celebrate Purim in the holy presence—together with the Mordechai HaTzaddik of our generation, who, as promised, seals with his signet ring all those who gather in his shadow during the holy days of Purim. This year, Purim was three holy and awesome days, beginning on the night of “Purim D’Perazim” (for open cities), continuing on Shabbat Kodesh of Shushan Purim, and concluding on Sunday with “Purim D’Mukafim HaMeshulash” (for walled cities). How fortunate we are and how good is our portion that we have merited all this abundance—the “Hungarian wine” flowing freely, "according to the law, without coercion, and according to the desire of every man!"

Below is extensive coverage of the holy night of Purim, the eve of the 14th of Adar, in which we merited to the Maariv prayer and the reading of the Megillah:

At 6:15 PM, Moreinu HaRav shlit"a entered for the prayer of Purim night, adorned in a tallit of techeilet and in white garments interwoven with royal gold.  Immediately, the singing of "Or Zarua LaTzaddik" began, as thousands stood in the courtyard of our Beit Midrash beneath the balcony of his home. Due to the occurrence of "Purim HaMeshulash" this year, many had come from all over the country to hear the Mordechai HaTzaddik of our generation lead the Maariv prayer and the Megillah reading on this night, when the King of the World hears every prayer directed toward Him—this night when Moreinu HaRav shlit"a drew close to the Light of Lights. After about twenty minutes, the Rav recited Kaddish and began the Maariv prayer of this holy and awesome night. As he had mentioned in the preceding days during the daily shiur, this night is like the night of Yom Kippur, and even higher than Kol Nidrei! After the prayer, Moreinu HaRav shlit"a entered his home for a brief ten-minute break. Upon returning, he delivered an awe-inspiring shiur in which he strengthened the community on the significance of these holy days of Purim, which this year consist of three days in the “Reisha d'Lo Ityada” (the “Unknown Head”)—a level preceding sin itself. These are three days in which one can transcend all desires. The Rav strongly urged that one should not become intoxicated to the point of neglecting prayer, God forbid, or—worse still—causing harm to another. At 7:00, Moreinu HaRav shlit"a recited the three blessings and began reading the Megillah. For a full forty minutes, he read with trembling and awe, literally living each verse and section of the Megillah as if the miracle of Purim were unfolding before him mamash now in real time, the miracle renewing itself at each moment. As every year, his voice broke in tears upon reciting the verse "When the turn came for Esther bat Avichail, uncle of Mordechai…,” as well in the verse "To annihilate, kill, and destroy…". Words cannot describe the power of the Megillah reading, in its unique niggun and with the pleasantness of the pure voice of the Mordechai HaTzaddik of our generation! Upon completing the Megillah reading, Moreinu HaRav shlit"a recited the blessing "HaRav et Riveinu", and then began the song "Shoshanat Yaakov" for approximately five minutes with fiery simcha, which had been contained throughout the holy and awesome Megillah reading.  It now erupted with great force, as dancing quickly filled the entire courtyard, accompanied by the orchestra – joy and gladness for Shuvu Banim! The dancing continued even during the recitation of “U’Va L’Tzion” following the Megillah reading, as Moreinu HaRav shlit"a extended the singing of "Baruch Hu Elokeinu" and "Hu Yiftach Libeinu B'Torato" for some twenty minutes. Afterwards, Moreinu HaRav shlit"a concluded the prayer and delivered a short shiur, after which he entered his holy home at 8:22 PM, following over two hours (2:07) that we merited on this holy night of Purim.
