Shiur for Yeshivat Noam Hashem in Old City at Home of Rav Berland Shlit"a

Yeshivat Noam Hashem for English speakers in the Old City

From the time of Moreinu HaRav Eliezer Berland shlit"a's return close to two years ago, tens of American bachurim (young men) have ascended to the Holy Land to dwell in the shadow of the Rav shlit"a.  Because of the difficulties of the language, under the direction of the Rav shlit"a, a yeshiva was established in our Beit Midrash in the Old City in Jerusalem for the American bachurim.  At its head is one of the Rav's students, who gives shiurim daily in English.  Likewise, Rav Eliyahu Succot shlit"a occasionally gives chizzuk to the bachurim with his fascinating shiurim in English.

As part of giving chizzuk to these God-fearing bachurim, they merited to enter the Rav's house for a special shiur on Wednesday night, 25 Cheshvan before Ma'ariv.  Below is a summary of some of the Rav's words:

The Rav began the shiur on the subject of Ur Kasdim and how Avraham very much wanted to be burned for the sanctification of God's Name and didn't fear Nimrod.  The Rav shlit"a brought in the name of the Arizal that the Satan received permission to bring down to the world Nimrod opposite the great light of Avraham.  Afterwards, the Rav spoke about Amatlai bat Karnavo -- the mother of Avraham Avinu -- and the story of Avraham's birth, that it began with Nimrod gazing at the stars and seeing that a son would be born to Terach who was destined to swallow up all the nations of the world, including Nimrod, who ordered that the pregnancy of Amatlai be overseen.  At the same time, Terach's maidservant also was pregnant, and on the day that Avraham was supposed to born, they switched between him and the son of the maidservant and threw the son of the maidservant into fire.  Amatlai fled with her child to a cave, and there he nursed milk and honey from rocks until the age of three, at which time he emerged from the cave and bowed down to the sun.  Afterwards, when nighttime arrived, he bowed down to the moon.  Then when the sun once again shined forth, his mother asked if there is a ruler of the world.  A Heavenly voice called out and said, "Yes, it is I, the Holy One Blessed is He."  Then Terach found him and recognized that he was his son, and appointed him supervisor over selling idols.  When people came to buy the idols, he showed to them how ridiculous idolatry is. Afterwards, the Rav shlit"a spoke about his trip to Kerestir after Rosh Hashanah.  The Rav shlit"a spoke about the miracles which Rebbe Yeshaya of Kerestir would perform even after his passing.  Once there was a plague and Rebbe Yeshaya ben R' Moshe appeared to a certain woman and told her to say, "In the merit of Rebbe Yeshaya ben R' Moshe," and the child was healed. Towards the end of the shiur, the Rav shlit"a spoke on the subject of niggunim (holy melodies), and how the matter of Rabbeinu is niggunim, and without niggunim the prayer doesn't ascend.  Therefore, one needs to sing niggunim and songs before and after prayer.  After a shiur of twenty minutes, the Rav shlit"a concluded with Kaddish and blessed the students of the Yeshiva participating in the shiur.
