Shiur to Kollel Students of Shuvu BanimâOld City at Home of Râ Berland Shlitâa
THESE ARE THE SAME AVREICHIM (KOLLEL STUDENTS) WHO KILL THEMSELVES IN THE TENT OF TORAH, FROM MIDNIGHT UNTIL THE MAARIV PRAYER WITH OUR REBBE RAV BERLAND SHLITâA, AS THE RAV SHLITâA ESTABLISHED FOR THEM â AS HE DID FOR THOSE AVREICHIM OF THE ORIGINAL SHUVU BANIM FROM 45 YEARS AGO. Those avreichim came to a shiur in the home of Rav Berland shlit"a on the eve of 21 Av before the Maariv prayer. At the beginning of the shiur, the Rav dealt with the laws of testimony and about the nuances of warning in the laws of court-implemented executions. Afterwards, he spoke about taking advantage of oneâs time for learning Gemara. After this, the Rav spoke about the time of child development â that the age of 12 is the most important time in life, and that itâs worthwhile for the child to invest himself during this period as much as possible. The Rav explained regarding this that today they donât teach children the words of the Gemara properly, such as in âElu Metziotâ in Baba Metzia, regarding a kav in four cubits. As is his way in holiness, he went into this sugya and began to delve deep into the words of the Gemara and the measurements therein. Afterwards he continued, speaking about the non-legal portions in the Talmud. The Rav then spoke at length about the level of Mosheâs staff and more. At the conclusion of the shiur, he spoke about the war of Amon and Moav and about Yehoshafat (from II Chronicles Ch. 20), that through singing and thanksgiving the Ammonites and Moabites died without the Jews having to do anything. The Rav explained why the singers only sang âHodu LâHashem, ki leolam chasdo (Give thanks to Hashem, for His kindness is forever,â that when a non-Jew dies we donât sing, as Hashem said to the ministering angels at the Red Sea â âThe work of My hands is drowning in the sea, (and you sing songâŚ)â
