Why Elijah the Prophet Comes to All Circumcisions • A Lesson in Kiddusha Rabba Parshat Vayigash from the Esteemed Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a

Before you is the complete lesson given on the holy Shabbat of Parshat Vayigash 5786 by the esteemed Rabbi Eliezer Berland shlit"a, during Kiddusha Rabba after the conclusion of the Mussaf prayer:

The lesson is written as understood by the listener, and if there is an error, it should be attributed to the writer and not, God forbid, to our teacher the Rav shlit"a

The Zohar in Parshat Vayigash asks, why was Elijah the Prophet afraid of Jezebel? Was Elijah the Prophet afraid that Jezebel would kill him? After all, anyone who approached him could be burned in a second; he killed 400 prophets of Baal, and another 450, and another 50, and another 51. He burned anyone who approached him. [The Rav said in English 850 50 and another 51] He was simply a "killer," so why was he afraid at all? He had the power of Nadav and Avihu, only Nadav and Avihu ascended to the heavens 'when they offered strange fire,' and he ascended in a chariot of fire and horses of fire. So why was he afraid of Jezebel?! Jezebel was the wife of Ahab, Ahab is the letters of brother-father, he was a brother to his father in heaven, he was supposed to be Mashiach ben Yosef, but he nullified himself to his wife. One should nullify to a wife, but (only) if she is kosher, if she is a tzaddikah, but Jezebel was wicked.
So indeed, the Zohar says it is not written 'and he feared' – it is not written that he was afraid, it is written 'and he saw' – that he saw! What did he see? He saw that he was going to receive a new neshamah (soul) – that he was going to enter the cleft of the rock, and then he went to the cleft of the rock. The cleft of the rock is the month of Tevet 'Behold, there is a place with Me, and you shall stand upon the rock' (Exodus 33:21), every place that is written with Me is the month of Tevet. 'Magnify Hashem with me' (Psalms 34) is Tevet, also Esther is written 'in the tenth month, which is the month of Tevet' (Esther 2:16) – anyone who marries in Tevet will have peace in the home.
Esther received the kingdom in the month of Tevet, and it is written Esther was greenish. What does greenish mean? Our Rebbe explains in Torah 12 that it is the green line that surrounds the entire world, which is the secret of the understanding that surrounds the world, that the neshamah of the tzaddik surrounds the entire world,
so Elijah went to enter the cleft of the rock. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and Hashem said to him 'Arise, eat' (1 Kings 19:5) – eat! Regarding Moses, it is written the opposite, that he emptied all the food; he did not eat burekas or blintzes, but regarding Elijah it is written 'Arise, eat,' he wanted to be like Moses, he wants the mouth of Moses. You cannot be like Moses our teacher – Hashem says to him 'What are you doing here, Elijah?' (1 Kings 19:9) and because he said 'alone' (1 Kings 19:14) he was punished that he must come to all the circumcisions.
The Baal HaSulam asks what kind of punishment is this, why come to all the circumcisions? So he says: because he wanted to be like Moses, Moses was born anew every day, every day he was like a newborn infant, so they tell him you want to be like Moses, come every day to the circumcisions, be like a newborn infant. King David says 'like a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned child is my soul' (Psalms 131).
